Walmart is known to be a small town business killer with its cutthroat prices and massive concrete locations but it is rare to see this big box store go abandoned. Averaging at 2.5 football fields per store location, Walmart occupies around 698 million square feet of land in the U.S. alone.
For this particular Walmart that was abandoned in McAllen, Texas, this 124,500-square-foot location was transformed my Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle into the single largest public library in the USA.
The use of the abandoned building was brilliant and its design won the International Interior Design Association’s 2012 Library Interior Design Competition. Using the buildings original skeleton, the design firm put a fresh coat of paint, added some glass-enclosed spaces and walls to create a welcoming environment for people to learn.
With this massive space at their disposal they were able to create sound-proof lounges, 64 computer labs, 16 public meeting rooms, 14 public study spaces, 10 children computer labs and 2 genealogy computer labs. This project was an incredible success and showcased the incredible use of a massive abandoned space.
