How much money are you planning to spend on the engagement ring? A recent study done by researchers from Emory University may have you changing your mind. The study revealed that couples who spend less than $2000 for an engagement ring improve the success rates of their marriages. Couples spending over $2000 have a sharp increase in divorce rates. Couples who go all out and blow over $20,000 on a ring increase their odds of divorce 3.5 times. The research does not explore the reasons behind this phenomenon, but suspect it may be tied to financial stresses.
We have a slightly different theory, that women are going to appreciate. The research was conducted by professors Andrew Francis and Hugo Mialon. Is it ironic two men would ask this question, or not? We did not check on the professors marital status, but it makes you wonder if one of them might be preparing a proposal.
