What would you do if you bought a parcel of land with huge boulders and rock outcroppings consuming part of the property? Would you build you new home in the open green grass and leave the rocks to themselves? Olson Kundig Architects took a very different approach. They chose to preserve the grassy areas for cultivation and enjoyment and built the house right into the boulders. The home became known as the Camouflaged Concrete house because of the way to disappears into the rocks. Not only do the rocks surround the home, they are an important internal feature in the home, too. The boulders appear in the bathroom highlighted with rough wood siding. A concrete fireplace has a rock footing protruding from its base. The patio area is surrounded with a rocky display fencing in the perimeter.
Olson Kundig Architects took advantage of the rocks and boulders to create a home that embraces the environment and becomes one of the most unique living spaces we have seen.
