Cubli looks simple lying on the ground. A simple metal framed cube with some electronics shoved inside, but once it is put in motion, you will stare in wonder. Cubli can walk itself across a floor by flopping from side to side using centrifugal motors and powerful brakes, but that is not what makes it cool. Cubli can stand on an edge, unassisted. Then it can flip itself up on a corner and hold the position, balancing on the point of the corner. All of this is done through the used of high speed motors that generate the power and then sudden braking which forces the cube to move. It sounds simple until you realize the preciseness of applied power required to raise onto an edge and then stand on a corner.
The Cubli design is already being considered for use in future space missions and for creating self-assembling robots. The future of robotics is racing towards us at an amazing pace.
