Jan Kempenaers journeyed throughout the region stepping into Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, and other territories from the former republic. Hidden in these countries are a numerous large monuments that were built to honor the end of World War II and were major tourist attractions. Since the breakup of the republic and the bloody civil wars that rocked the region the monuments have gone unnoticed, unremembered, and ignored. Jan Kempenaers took his camera and captured the grandeur of the monuments to remind the world of their beauty and to try to rekindle the stories hidden behind each monument, which have faded from our minds.
It is both Jan and our hopes that as the world remembers these treasures the renewed interest helps preserve their beauty and bring their stories of hope and wishes of peace back to the forefront.
