Inspired by the first shoes created by prehistoric man, Czech Republic design student Maria Nina Vaclavek, caught up with Dezeen to talk about her award winning Rectangle Shoe design. Maria was inspired by the idea of wrapping the user’s foot with leather, for which the leather would take the exact form. Using a wet vegetable-tanned leather, Maria wrapped a platform and a shoemaker’s last and upon drying in the sun takes shape of the user’s foot. Though the design might look rigid, Maria assures that they are as comfortable as any other shoe.
