Rugged wooden fences surrounding a corral were not the vision Tom Ford had in mind when he contacted Tadao Ando to design his ranch in New Mexico. Instead Tom now has a ranch that melds the flow of Eastern style with the ranch of the American West. The corral for working horses is created from a concrete and is circular, with circular passageways leading into the corral. Small ponds of fresh water stand elegantly between the horse’s exercise area and the concrete stalls that flow along the edge of the ranch. A large circular shade platform stands on the grounds to shield both humans and horses from the blazing New Mexico sun.
The entire design flows with an Eastern feel for balance, but still maintains the important functionality we expect on a rugged western ranch.
