Outside of Joshua Tree, California sits a rustic homestead that appears translucent and offers a reflective getaway from life. Phillip K Smith III took over the homestead and added mirrored panels to the home that reflect back the surrounding desert. The mirrors give viewers the impression the home is only half-built with every other board missing. Your mind is tricked into believing you are looking right through an empty home and seeing out the other side. The nighttime effect is even more incredible. It almost appears the interior lights are shining out from the “missing” slats, but the reality is small lights are providing a reflective glow. The windows are painted with a different color light at night, making them glow in warm colors providing the appearance of curtains or even a stained glass effect.
The design by Phillip K Smith III pushes our imagination. It shows a dramatic method of bringing out the surrounding beauty of nature while providing an optical illusion that captures everyone’s attention.
